Hip Flexors Killin' me

what a nice weekend. I took Fri off. beloved and Iwent for a 2.5 hr snowshoe, i canme home and did my first road run of the week. man do treadmills suck. But running on the road was dicy and icy and slow. A short run AHR 122

sat was a good 45 min general aerobic run (AHR 135) 46" with 6 x 100m strides uphill at the end. Felt awesome. Then stretched nicely at a free Hot bikram Yoga. felt great.

Today, sunday, was too much. running thru deep snow trails for 1:33 AHR only 120 but it was tough and I am tight.

Exciting tracking results of jon Brown in Japan and mlord in California today.

Raw Runner Philosophy in a raw nutshell

The bibles (which are very thin books):

"Thrive" by Brendan Brazier (brendanbrazier.com)
"On Sports and Nutrition" by Douglas Graham (http://www.doctorgraham.cc/)

My Philosophy:

Digesting is #1 stressor
The activity that consumes most of our metabolic energy is digestion. It is the most stressful activity our body undergoes- even on the raw vegan diet.

Use your energy
The goal of the athlete is to channel his energy to improving in his sport. The energy wasted on dealing with components of the standard american diet, which is based on meat, wheat and dairy, could be used to aid recovery from training and boost the immune system and motivation.

What if the athlete ate only nutritious food...?
If you eat ONLY foods and beverages that are easy to digest AND full of undamaged nutrients- IN THEIR NATURAL FORM- then your body can recover from training faster and allow you to get more out of your training. The food that meets this criteria is raw fruit, veggies, seeds and nuts. All other foods are inferior- including all supplements.

What if the athlete avoided ALL inferior foods...?
If you AVOID food and beverages that damage your body , cause stress, are difficult to digest, difficult to eliminate OR lack ANY of the basic nutrients such as water, fibre, enzymes, minerals and vitamins-IN THEIR NATURAL FORM - then you maximize the amount of energy and resources your body has available to recover from training. All cooked foods are damaged by cooking or processing.

I have been a guniea pig to see how adopting the above tenets would effect my running. The experiment started Feb 7, 2005. The results have been amazing. This blog is my recommittment to these tenets. I want to use this blog to keep me on track. Maintaining raw in a cooked meat, wheat, dairy, coffee, salt alcohol world is a bigger challenge than the marathon.

Get Ready for Raw Runner Blog

Iam a 41 year old male with a marathon PR of 2:46:42 (2006) and 10km PR of 35:20 (2006) and a half marathon PR of 1:18:57 (2005).

Watch me try for a new marathon PR of 2:39:59 by 2010 and a 10km time of 34:59 in 2007. My goal is to get faster as I get older. I want to be PRing 10-20 years from now at least.

I think the secret is diet, sleep and strategic fasting.

You will hopefully get out of this blog some chuckles and an inside look into the brain of a "age grouper" runner as he seeks to improve his performance in competitive running.

What will make the Raw Runner blog unique will be the focus on the raw vegan diet. Rarely do I read anything sunstantial about diet in my running books or online. In fact I have been laughed off chatlines for even suggesting that what you eat and don't eat is crucial to training and recovery and hence performance.

My goal will be to train hard thanks to a 100% raw vegan diet. However staying true to this diet has been a challenge. I believe, if I can stay raw, I will continue this trend of steadily getting faster by being able to train hard sans injury, lulls in motivation and illness.

I plan on being rigorously honest with my successes and failures so this blog could be a voyeuristic peek into the mind of a regular middle aged guy trying to run with the big dogs using a different approach.

One warning: since this is my blog and Iam not a good typer, my occasional rants may not be nicey nice- takes too many words and time to try and say things without offending anyone. So as a disclaimour: I love you one and all despite what i think of your diet or your ideas about diet. If you run, we are one.
